I remember Timothy Zahn as being the author of militaristic science fiction (including some very well regarded Star Wars books), but have never read any of his short stories, so when The Battle of Space Fort Jefferson and Other Stories went on sale I bought it and read it.
To my surprise, none of the stories in the book are militaristic science fiction (including the titular stories). Many of them do involve the Park Service in one form or another, with the protagonist being a park ranger of some sort. Many stories feel like they're the start of a longer story, ending in a critical spot (including one superhero type story involving blue men).
All of the stories are workman like fiction. One of them feels like an episode from The Twilight Zone, and many feel like they could have been standalone episodes in some sort of TV show. Few of them made me want to run out and by other Timothy Zahn books. One of the bigger disappointments was that there were no author's notes attached to each story, so you never got any context as to why or how the story was written.
Nevertheless, any short story collection where I read every book in the volume is above average. I can recommend this.
